Historic Walled Garden, Market, Shop and Restaurant

ID: 5553
County: East Sussex

Situated in the grounds of a large estate and Nature Reserve, and at the gateway to the South Downs National Park, this walled garden was designed over 200 years ago to protect unusual and exotic plants from weather, and as a productive kitchen gardens to the local manor house. The gardens have been expertly re-designed by modern-day landscape architect Dominic Cole, renown for his work on the Eden Project. There is a market selling local produce, and a restaurant selling seasonal dishes to sit and enjoy the surroundings in the large alfresco dining area. There are also classrooms, show gardens and commercial greenhouses.

The Palm House was first opened in the year of our Queen’s coronation. It was built in 1953 and is one of three of its kind remaining in the UK. The heritage barn is Grade 2 listed. Whilst it is thought to have been used for agricultural purposes, it has a fireplace so was likely a dwelling at some point. During the war, troops were stationed at Stanmer House and the barn was occupied by the war office.

A lovely location for rural, country life filming and photography.
