The Club That George Built

We recently facilitated filming over at Worthing seafront earlier in July for multimedia company Whynow Ltd who were filming ‘The Club That George Built’ – a documentary about Worthing Football Club and its remarkable owner George Dowell.

George was born and raised in Worthing and was on the brink of playing for the club’s first team at the age of 17 until a car crashed changed everything. The accident left George paralyzed from the chest down and, for a number of years, he struggled to deal with the trauma of what had happened to him. As the accident and impact of his injuries took their toll on George’s mental health, his life was in danger of falling apart. Until he turned to football. In 2015 George used his compensation money from the accident to save financially-troubled Worthing FC from going into administration. In doing so he became the youngest owner of a football club in the country.

Almost 10 years on the club are now playing at their highest level since they were founded in 1886. George has just been awarded an MBE for his services to football and the disabled community. This is the story of how he saved the Worthing Football Club and how Worthing Football Club saved him.

The Club that George Built is premiering on TNT Sport and Discovery+ on Tuesday 8th October – check out the trailer below!
